I would like to introduce myself. I am Donna Su Jean, founder of Happy Dog Creations. My passion for creativity goes way back to my childhood, when I used to sketch drawings of dogs from picture books. In high school I took fine art classes, then I went on to college to study Commercial Art where I learned all about type, color and composition. Commercial Art piqued my interest for offset printing, so I included that in my studies. There I learned about the perfect halftone dot, paper and printing press operation.
I started my career working in small print shops where I did everything from bindery and deliveries to graphic design, customer service and sales. During that time, I grew into a mid-level management position where I provided leadership and training to new employees. Eventually I entered service bureau work, which is where your skills are really put to the test and you learn a lot! Later, I had the opportunity to work in a large printing/publishing company where I learned how to strip and prep files for large sheet-fed and web presses. I also prepared files for other output devices such as digital copiers, large ink jets and an electrostatic plotter. As my printing career moved forward, I became an Indigo Digital Press, operator. I loved this because it was up to me to take the designers vision and turn it into the clients reality.
From there, my printing experience took me to an advertising agency looking for a person with a strong printing background that could be responsible for the proper preparation of print ads, collateral materials, packaging—anything that fell into the printing category. I spent quite a bit of time designing packages and carrying through the branded look and feel as established by research conducted by our company through focus groups, the client and the creative team. My experience with packaging taught me the need for processes to ensure consistencies—not just in the packaging, but in the way we work and communicate as a team. Once we established processes, it made it easier to help each other out when the pressure was on, and also made it easier to manage freelancers.
In 2006 I decided to take my skills on the road. I consider myself an Independent Design Professional. What that means is—I can take your project from start to finish, or anything in between. I am happy to work in my office or yours. I work on a MacBook Pro, loaded with Creative Suite CC. I can bring order to chaos and I thrive on variety. I am available for large or small projects, long-term or short-term.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to working with you.
